Earth Day

Earth Day is on April 22. The first Earth Day was on April 22 in 1970, when 20 million people across America celebrated it. It was a time when cities were buried by their own smog and polluted rivers caught fire.

The  Earth Day is now celebrated annually around the globe thanks to the combined efforts of the U.S. government and different grassroots organizations, which started the celebration  as a national environmental recognition day. It has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment.

The Earth Day

The Earth Day is celebrated for the good of the Environment, for clean water and air.

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22 1970 in America. Now it´s celebrated every year across the world.  In September 1969, at a conference in Seattle, Washington, the U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration for the environment. The Earth Day made the US congress aware of environmental issues and  many important environmental laws, like the Clean Air Act, laws to protect drinking water and many other laws were passed.

On the Earth Day in 2008, our class spent the  Day by cleaning up the  forest near our school. We also try to recycle things and  buy green products and green energy. We also respect the principles of a minimalistic way of living.

Our  Earth  Day

I heard about the Earth Day, when my teacher told our the class about it. I went to clean the forest near our school with my class.

We found  a fire extinguisher and a lot of trash. It was shocking  that there was so much garbage.

Then we went back to the school and we made some posters about the Earth Day, and wrote an article for the Finnish Wikipedia.

After the school day I  told my parents about the Earth day. They had never heard of it. From now on we are going to celebrate it every year.
